Gumbo’s Wine Dinner – August 2013

Gumbo’s Wine Dinner – August 2013

My wife and I have had dinner ( a couple of times) at a Louisiana style restaurant in Georgetown called Gumbo’s.  We have been quite impressed.  So when we heard that they have monthly wine dinners, we decided to check it out.  Gumbo’s is owned by Shuler and Denise Page.  They are great owners.  Very personable and committed to quality.  The August Dinner was hosted by Keith Sennikoff of Global Wines.  This guy knows his stuff.  I learned a lot from him this evening.  And I will keep in touch and probably bug him a lot about my wine needs.  Keith decided to present French wines for this dinner.

River’s End

River’s End

In my opinion (and I am correct), the finest restaurant on the Sonoma Coast is River’s Endin Jenner. River’s End is literally at the end of the Russian River were it runs into the Pacific Ocean. So they have great views of the Russian River and the Ocean. There is even a little Harbor Seal colony at the mouth of the river. The sunsets here are spectacular.  River’s End has great wine pairings. The Wine Spectator has awarded River’s End an Award of Excellence, which is quite the achievement. Alexander’s at Timber Cove Inn

Timber Cove Inn has a restaurant called Alexander’s. We spent a weekend at Timber Cove for our 19th Wedding Anniversary. So we decided to check out the restaurant for dinner. I am glad that we did. We both chose the 5 course chef paring with wine. The entire table did not have to do the pairing, which is nice. And you could make substitutions in the menu, which I did.

Here was the meal:

Iron Horse Vineyards

Evelyn and I have taken a number of trips to the Sonoma Coast. It is about a 2 hour drive from our house. So often times we stop for a little refreshment along the way. Enter Iron Horse Vineyards outside of Sebastopol.  Iron Horse specializes in Champagne. They are served at the White House in Washington DC. Fine Champagne Houses make Non Vintage wines and Declared wines. Non Vintage wines are blends and are thus produced every year. Declared wines are select and are thus produced only during the best vintages. Iron Horse releases its Declared wine as an “LD”, which stands for “late disgorged”.
